Formed in the small Northern English city of Wigan, Lancashire, in 1989 the Verve were together for a surprisingly long 10 years. Throughout that time the fragile outfit split up several times, toiled with drugs, got themselves arrested and were hospitalised, but importantly, nurtured some memorable music. Independent chart success came quickly with their first three singles ‘All In The Mind', ‘She's A Superstar', and ‘Gravity Grave' but chart success still eluded them. The psychedelic debut album ‘A Storm In Heaven' followed as did the schizophrenic ‘A Northern Soul' but it was when the groundbreaking LP, Urban Hymns was released that critical praise translated into hardcore record sales. With infighting taking a hold yet again that was to be the end of The Verve and I can't help feeling that we were all robbed of at least another two great albums. That said, this body of work documents the Verve's rise and rise and will find a cherished position in any collection.
