LGBTQ+ artist, Corey Streets single and music video Camaro is dropping March 10th nationwide. Corey’s full EP “Streetsmart” will be releasing this Summer. Listeners will find a blend of chill pop and R&B vibes, as well as a ballad song.
His work is inspired by his upbringing. Corey grew up in Rochester, New York and both of his parents passed away when he was young due to addiction. Growing up poor, and at one point homeless and on the streets- which inspired his name “Corey Streets”- taught him how to be self-reliant and dream big. Being bi-racial: half black, half white, and queer, Corey struggled to find himself as a kid and endured bullying. Music was his way to cope with feeling like he didn’t belong and now his goal is to share his experiences to alleviate others feeling the same.
The song Camaro is about breaking free, being sexy, and doing it in a way that is fun! As a queer artist, Corey admits he used to “tame” the sexual aspect of his work, but this represents a shift. “Riding in the Camaro” to some can be heard as enjoying a great moment with someone you love, but also the lyrics allow the listener to think about possible alternate meanings…like sex! Camaro was written to allude to a night with a lover and the video explores this theme.
In addition to this release, Corey is performing next at the Queer Music Festival in New York City at Bowery Electric on April 14, as well as other scheduled dates this Spring/Summer on both coasts..
What inspired the song Camaro? What is it about? As a queer artist, I used to “tame” the sexual aspect of myself, and Camaro is me breaking free, being sexy, and doing it in a way that is fun. “Riding in the Camaro” to some can be heard as enjoying a great moment with someone you love, but also the lyrics allow the listener to think about possible alternate meanings. “Riding” in the Camaro through the night, meaning sex! Yes, Camaro was written to allude to a night with a lover. In the music video you’ll see a surprise guest come into the fantasy of Camaro, that provides a more clear understanding of the actual meaning behind the song.
When did you first know you wanted to be an artist? When did you actively begin singing/creating music? Do you play any instruments? Funny enough, the first time I realized I wanted to be an artist was when I was 10 years old, after I “performed” at the hair salon my Grandma would go to, and sang a song I came up with for all the older women getting their hair done. The feeling of the entire salon standing up and clapping for me was like nothing else. I knew then that I wanted to sing and perform. I do play some instruments, I dabble a bit in guitar and piano.
