Taylor Castro ‘Abyss’ song premiere
14 May 2020
Music-News.com is proud to host the exclusive world premiere of ‘Abyss’ by Taylor Castro.
Taylor Castro spills mythological metaphor in her latest psyche-dissecting track, ‘Abyss’
‘Abyss’ is the latest release from Taylor Castro, the artist making a name for herself as writer of some of the most unusual and insightful lyrics in the pop industry today. This track in particular, telling the story of a relationship with a boy who seems indecipherable to her, makes use of references to mythology, as well as some of the most perceptive analysis you will ever hear in a pop song.
With this latest track, it seems as if Castro will never run out of insights. We have the musical equivalent of a microscope here, with this boy’s personality being dissected again and again within her poetic and analytical songwriting style. The song ends with its instrumentation stripped back, leaving Castro’s powerful and soulful voice in the centre of the mix, and the lyrics become inescapable as we bask in the majesty of Castro’s way with words.
This is not to say that the song is not also incredibly catchy; the finger snaps and atmospheric synths ensure that this song is not something you’ll be able to stop singing any time soon. The chorus, when it finally drops, is anthemic to the point where you can visualise a sea of waving arms, and the percussion turns from minimalist finger snaps to full-blown trap-inspired beats. There are beautiful and interesting harmonies used towards the end of the chorus, rounding off the deeply personal and emotive mood which Taylor Castro’s songs always create.
This as a follow-up to ‘Girl, Afraid’, Castro’s outpouring of self acceptance in the face of her struggles with OCD, is an incredibly powerful move. Proving that she can point her magnifying glass towards others as well as herself, ‘Abyss’ sees Taylor Castro untangle her thoughts about a friendship with a maturity, wisdom and honesty way beyond her years.
