Sister Sledge honour music legends Nile Rogers and Bernard Edwards
13 June 2016
Sister Sledge, famed for their award-winning, worldwide hits such as We are Family, Lost in Music and World, Rise and Shine, were invited to honour music legends Nile Rogers and Bernard Edwards* at the 2016 Songwriters Hall Of Fame Annual Induction and Awards Gala.
The Sisters joined a high profile roster of attendees including The B-52s, James Corden, Kenneth Gamble & Leon Huff, Jennifer Hudson, Roger McGuinn, Marcus Mumford, Rachel Platten, Jussie Smolett and Jon Voight to spotlight the incredible achievements of inductees Elvis Costello, Marvin Gaye*, Tom Petty, Nile Rodgers & Bernard Edwards* and Chip Taylor and Special Award Recipients Lionel Richie, Nick Jonas and Seymour Stein.
The finale highlight of the evening was Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards’ induction. Sister Sledge welcomed Nile and Bernard’s two sons, Bernard (“Focus”) Edwards Jr. and David Edwards to the stage and Nile recounted old tales of the duo, saying that they were “polar opposites but when they played music they were one.”
Sister Sledge took to the stage and had the audience on their feet with the hit “We Are Family.”
Speaking about Sister Sledge's participation in the event, Joni Sledge said: "We are so thrilled to have attended the Songwriters Hall of Fame Annual Induction Awards. It was an amazing night, as we got to see so many of our friends and peers in the music industry. We were honored to present the distinguished award inducting Nile Rogers and Bernard Edwards into the song writers Hall of Fame. The whole evening had a cool New York vibe and was dedicated to song-writing brilliance.
Some of our highlights from the night were: Lionel Richie being the perfect gentleman, and swooning us with “Hello.” Jennifer Hudson torching his song "Still". Tom Petty was so nice and amazingly humble. We loved seeing "WAMOW" Diana Krall and her better half, inductee Elvis Costello, and Nick Jonas singing his heart out!
The biggest highlight for us, however, was sharing in Nile's happiness. He was all smiles, and wailing in joy on his sweet guitar while my sisters and I surrounded him, singing We are Family. Nile, if we haven't properly said it, thank you brother".
Nile glowed with gratitude, holding his award high saying, “This is the one that means everything to me.”
Sister Sledge are gearing up for the release of their new music track Woman are the Music of the World (WAMOW) this August 2016.
