Carmella Minto aka Pariz 1 started rapping at the age of 17 in her hometown of Nottingham. She's now in London signed to label Street Dreams. Music News talked to her about her music.

MN: What inspired you to become a MC?

Pariz 1: At 18 I wanted to be a singer, but I can't sing! So I decided to become a MC, I met a guy called Black Viking at a youth club and it all started from there.

MN: Is it harder for female MCs?

Pariz 1: At the moment it doesn't bother me, it's not a hindrance. I just have to speak louder in a room full of men.

MN: Do you think UK hip-hop receives enough recognition in Britain?

Pariz 1: We take it seriously, that's all that matters. Recognition isn't my goal, I rap because I like it.

MN: What music do you like at the moment?

Pariz 1: I like all types of music, Coldplay, Kaiser Chiefs, Artic Monkeys. I'm crazy about Mobb Deep, but I don't usually buy US albums, I get UK mixtapes.

MN: Who should we be looking out for?

Pariz 1: Young Blood's Militia are great, they've got a new video out on Channel U called 'We Stand Tall'. Pesky the Professional is good too.

MN: It's the elections today, did you vote?

Pariz 1: No, I didn't get round to it. But don't copy me, it's important to vote.
