Interesting to find a performer who manages to be modern and retro at the same time but Ollie Stewart seems perfectly capable of melding the mesmeric beats of a very modern electro sound and the completely retro and still very effective computerised voices.
And when his own voice comes through he has a fine and emotional tone without being sweet or OTT.
‘I See Love’ has more than touches of the old Donna Summer classic ‘I Feel Love’ but the beats and the building rhythms take it in a totally different direction and the end result is powerfully dreamy.
‘Savour Me’ is dark and lonely and has a pleading tone – this isn’t commanding that you savour – it tugs at your heartstrings, begging for your adoration.
‘Tare’ is also dark but there is more melody and less reliance on the electronic and the listener gets the chance to hear just what he can do with a song. There is also tenderness in the balance between the massive beats and his voice that just emphasises once more that Stewart is a talented singer and given the right production has real strength.
‘My Delight’ has a lot of echoes of bands like Engine 7 while ‘Made At Dark’ builds from a small start into an anthemic and hypnotic piece.
Ollie Stewart is not the finished article but he sounds as though he is building from a strong melodic and expressive base – on to watch and no slouch here and now.
