Music-News.com Underground returned with their monthly night upstairs at The Enterprise in Chalk Farm on Thursday 21st October. One of the bands on the line-up was Inseminate, Hastings/London based rock ‘n’ roll band.
Inseminate burst onto the stage, belting out their in your face, sing-along number ‘State of Emergency’, within the first few seconds I could clearly see that these guys were pure adrenaline and intensity. Vocalist Joe Thompson informed us that the next song was about alcohol, they quickly started ‘Outta Control’ with a simple, fast-paced, blues-based guitar intro which was fully powered once Max Thompson’s driving bass line kicked in. The end of the song came to a thunderous close with all members jumping around the stage; they really were out of control! ‘Second Hand Smoke’ came straight in with a heavy bass line before the drum and power chord onslaught ignited the chorus which caused all members to go into an onstage frenzy. This built up to the climatic solo where guitarist Tollef Rikje-Pearson really proved his worth as a no-nonsense rock ‘n’ roll lead guitarist.
It was then time for a particular favourite of mine, ‘Down To The Bone’. Alex Burt started with a powerful snare and tom 4-beat which went right through my body and exploded into a guitar driven fist pumper. After the electrifying guitar solo the song went into a breakdown complete with machine gun-like snare rolls with imitation by Max Thompson and Tollef Rikje-Pearson of such a weapon with their instruments.
Then came ‘Hunky Dorey’, the part of the show which saw Tollef Rikje-Pearson’s extended guitar solo that wreaked havoc into the crowd all whilst being spun on Joe Thompson’s shoulders. This is all before playing on top of the tables and finishing it off by playing his guitar behind his head! We were introduced to the next song by a vocal and guitar, call and response. This lead into ‘Sweet Lips’, a high-tempo, upbeat track with a brilliantly obvious double meaning.
The set came to a close with the short but sweet ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Riot’ which saw Tollef Rikje-Pearson leap from the stage into the audience and run throughout the venue like he is controlled by his guitar!
All in all a tight set with superb songs and energy like no other band I’ve seen, they were definitely worth the trip out of the house and I will certainly watch these lads again!
You can check them out live at The Haverstock Arms, Camden on the 5th November at 9:30pm and it’s free entry! You can also find them online at www.inseminaterocks.co.uk and www.myspace.com/inseminatetheband
