A former furniture warehouse named after a redundant train station may not seem the likeliest of places to see live music.

Tucked against a south London rail track, Brixton East 1871 is a multi-purpose venue, home to anything from stand-up comedy to art exhibitions.

With their raw, edgy sound, CLUBBS were in their element in this industrial, urban setting.

Headlining this Laid Bare Presents night, the four-piece, led by lead singer Alice Trueman, has drawn comparisons with PJ Harvey, Jeff Buckley and Radiohead.

Their late-night set included songs from the band’s first EP, Memento (Hera, Raphael) and from their more recent Stranger EP, released in August this year.

Opener Hateful is a beautifully moody take on the fourth track from The Clash’s London Calling, while the mellow Skin A Man encapsulates all that this band is; raw, edgy and tender.

CLUBBS ended their set and the night with the punchy Fishing For The Moon and slow-building Beast, both due for release in 2016.
