Voice samples, poignancy and music that sounds like a lament sewn into the sky. So begins the enigma of a song: ‘Welcome To The Party' a tune that embodies the nauseating angst of teen movies and the soft, mellow musings of the older generation. In Junk Boy, mellow meets the meaningful. The album is the soundtrack to the life of the chill-out aficionado. ‘Embers' does exactly what it says on the tin' each of the soft vocals and faint, holy chimes reminding the listener of a wood fire with sparks fluttering into the distance like humming birds, wood malting into ash before the eyes, frivolity and laughter forcing the spitting flames into the distance, background noise for yet another party.
‘Spring' evokes feelings of regret and loss, the departure of the girl most adored by your heart. Imagine if everyone you've ever loved and cared for were in the same house as you for one night only. Throughout the hours of darkness you could party but-like Cinderella before you- you would always be aware that the happiness was temporary and soon, when the chimes call to you, you would have to forget such happiness ever existed and, as the light of the dawn hit the dew, you would have to console yourself that the inevitable must take place in front of you. She has to leave. Where she will go, you're not quite sure and you're not sure, not certain that she is ever coming back. This is the sentiment expressed in the song, the meaning behind the madness, the truth behind the tingling tune. So much derived from such a short, emotionally charged ditty.
Mik and Rich Hanscomb have produced a spellbinding album and the remainder of contributors to this magical compilation should also be applauded for their additions to one of the most beautiful albums recorded this year. Stunning, truly remarkable music. Bravo. Bravo.
