Having thoroughly enjoyed Homelands earlier this year, I had high hopes for London's 'Lovebox Weekender'. Sadly, the event failed to live up to my expectations.

One of the necessary requirements for any festival - music aside - is a laid back atmosphere without any stresses or strains. This, however, failed to materialise at Lovebox, which is no reflection on the acts appearing. Put simply, the size of the festival site seemed far too small for the number of people and attractions it was expected to hold. Everywhere we went, we seemed to be permanently in the middle of a crowd, which was a shame as Victoria Park was a great setting for the event.

Musically, however, the line up couldn't be faulted with headline sets from Mylo and Groove Armada in their only festival appearance of the summer. And in the midst of the weekend's rain, the tropical décor of the Strongbow Rooms provided a much-needed reminder of summer. Alongside the garlands of flowers, butterflies and even a stuffed parrot in a cage that adorned every available surface, Joey Negro went down a storm. His flamenco-style opening perfectly suited the surroundings, before he moved onto more commercial tracks such as Amerie's '1 Thing'.

All in all, Lovebox has the potential to be a great festival. I'll be interested to see how it grows over the next few years.
