Leicester lad KAV’s latest single is a heady mix of classic rock and roll vibes with a thumping chorus and some kooky backing vocals thrown in. It is the sort of sound that, whether down to the mix or the music, feels like it lacks something on record; it makes you wish you were hearing it live with an army of filthy rock fans and a pint of beer in your hand.
KAV’s drawling, seedy vocals and dirty rocking riffs (complete with compulsory guitar solo) come together to form a sound that takes you back a few years - it feels more suited to the days you could smoke inside clubs. Lyrically it remains simple and unpretentious, but it certainly proves the old rule that if you repeat a chorus enough times, it’s going to be stuck in the listener’s head by the end of the song.
The only issue is that the track evokes memories of too many different artists – Iggy Pop and The Soup Dragons instantly come to mind – and you wonder if KAV is yet to find a real identity of his own. The debut album is set for release in Feb 2013, and it will be interesting to see how this tried-and-tested sound can develop into something a little more unique.
