Rancid Hell Spawn is fronted by bassist/vocalist Charlie Chainsaw, former editor of Chainsaw fanzine.
The four-track EP ‘Abolition Of The Orgasm’ is the band’s first release in 16 years! Even when played on your turntable’s ‘45 setting’ (which seems to be the correct setting), this output screeches a ‘Do not adjust your set’ warning.
Mr. Chainsaw’s heavily distorted ‘let’s make this sound like a collision in progress’ tracks demand either a very open-minded attitude or, better still, a chemically altered state during listening.
The artist describes his compositions as “one-minute punk burnouts for the truly twisted, with record sleeves to match” and he isn’t far off the mark.
Side A offers ‘Dengue Doll’ - a punchy number composed by someone seemingly struck by a delirious fever – ultra fast, ultra brutal yet somehow, it still manages to let some catchy rhythms come to the surface.
‘Breakfast In The Pub’ (the second track) is faster still; it sonically describes the physical state of someone totally hungover and craving for a beer with a full, greasy English breakfast.
The two numbers on Side B are somewhat more ‘melodious’. Title track ‘Abolition Of The Orgasm’ is short and piercing, and sounds like an attack on someone’s scrotum, while ‘My Favourite Disease’, with it’s frenzied and whipping beat, invites you to a heavy dose of pogo dancing.
A true collectors item for the more adventurous punk connoisseur, shall we say. It's been already released in January but I was sent a review copy only the other week. You can purchase this 7” vinyl via www.wrench.org
