What I love about this album is the sheer, unabashed, exultation of it all: Gypsy Pistoleros are nothing if not confident and they go all out from the opening blast of ‘Living Down With The Gypsies’.
Ok, so waddawe got here?
They describe themselves as Flamenco Glam outlaws and in Lee Pistolero they are fronted by one of the great rock screamers. Iggy Pistolero rips out a monstrous guitar sound – as subtle as a catfight and just about as exciting – and Kenny K Doll on bass works with Jeff Pistolero to propel the band like a V12 on nitrous.
They have become the virtual house band for Rocklahoma – the only band top appear every year – and cross over the glam rock of Motley Crue with Mexicali blasters and Flamenco subtlety. They also rock like beasts.
Every track lights a fire including the single ‘La Vida Loca’ but they can also do a more tuneful number like ‘Sangra De Las Roses’. ‘Hotel de las Muertes’ is rapidly becoming a favourite along with ‘Shotgun Kiss is ay que dolor’.
They have obvious influences – Motley Crue and Poison both hide in there somewhere – but overall they break away from those and make something that is their own.
