The soundtrack from NBC's critically acclaimed musical drama 'Smash'’ is already been widely made available courtesy of Columbia Records. The TV show, produced by Steven Spielberg focuses around the lives of hopefuls dreaming of becoming an on-stage ‘Smash’ in a creation of a new Broadway musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe. Listening to the music from it’s fifth episode, (105: Lets Be Bad) it is delightful to already hear a bagful of thrills less than halfway through its first season that is still heavily developing.
Written by legendary American lyricist and composers Marc Shaiman and Scott Witman, Megan Hiltys (Who plays Ivy Lynn) belts out Lets Be Bad in this quick high tempo tune. Ivy poses as Mariyn Monroe in the episode, and as you can imagine, as the title suggests, she does not fail to deliver in a cheeky and seductive tone whist flaunting the amazing capability of her voice.
Meanwhile Katherine McPhee (Who plays Karen Cartwright) turns up the heat with a powerful, sexy rendition of James Browns ‘It’s a Mans World.’ Sounding very smooth and dainty, her vocal arrangement shares similarities of Christina Aguilera’s performance of the James Brown hit at the Grammy Awards last year. Coincidental or not, it’s easy to compare and therefore criticise that this does not triumph Aguilera’s performance in terms of emotion and impact.
Guest star Will Chase (Who plays Michael) definitely steals the show with a performance of a heartfelt rendition of Leon Russell’s 'A Song For You'. A song that has been recorded and performed by an array of artists in its forty year’s history, Chase is able to deliver a slow, tender pained plea for forgiveness that creates emotional and profound ballad. Definitely a standout track of the episode.
