The Broken Vinyl Club is a club I would love to join could I play killer chords or sing to save my life. Unfortunately I can’t, so my contribution to the club is this review.
The South Wales based band are living proof that there still is a fresh breeze blowing in the contemporary UK rock scene, and that retro music can be refreshing without sounding as if everything has simply been copied from the great tunes of yesterday.
Enter The Broken Vinyl Club, a quartet whose songs sound as groovy as their record sleeves look. Little wonder the band has the full-on approval of ex-Creation Records boss Alan McGee and Liam Gallagher to name but a few.
With their retro-style blues riffs, addictive rhythm, dense harmonies and jangly chord arrangements, the band are obviously influenced by acts like The La’s, The Kinks, The Querrymen, The Beatles and early Stones but effortlessly manage to make every composition their own.
The latest single (available as 7” vinyl or download format) goes to demonstrate once again that here’s a band destined to go from strength to strength.
Non-album track ‘Diamonds In Their Eyes’ is a thumping affair that slides between paces without ever losing thread. Snarly, in your face and spiked with a strong R & B vibe, this number will get even the lamest party going!
B-side ‘I Want You Girl’ is altogether more melodious yet just as energetic. Bursting with 60’s influenced harmonies a la The Byrds and with some additional tambourine beats thrown in; it’s a real feel-good song.
If you still haven’t checked out The Broken Vinyl Club yet, I urge you to do so asap – you won’t be disappointed!
