Opilec is a label that’s has kept its position at the forefront of Turin’s electronic music scene for many years thanks to a forward-thinking, open-minded approach to its signings and, of course, thanks to the stewardship of label boss I-Robots.

This is reflected in the label’s new compilation We Are Opilec, which features a broad selection of electronic music spread across two CDs. It’s a good representation of the Italian label’s history and it’s present state – both of which are healthy and built on strong foundations.

Rather than go through the whole LP track by track I thought I would highlight some of my personal favourites and state from the outset that this compilation should definitely feature in your record collection if you’re an open-minded fan of electronic music.

Last Call (European Connection Instrumental) by No More Klein and Mbo
A nice piece of retro Eighties style music here and a great opening to the album. As soon as the first flabby synth kicks in, your foot starts tapping and then the beat jumps in to get the energy pumping even more. Before you know there are more layers which really make this track and fun, uplifting dance number.

High Pressure Days (Todd Terje Remix) by The Units
One of the men of the moment, Todd Terje, turns his hand to a remix of Indie group The Units (who have several releases on the Opilec label). Todd puts his usual funky spin on the track, live-sounding drums kick along in the background while the vocals evoke a sense of the Eighties (like the previous track) – all done with a thoroughly modern twist of course.

Kaliyuga by Eduardo De La Calle
Deep, driving techno is the order of the day here – in total contrast to the previous two tracks. This is a great production that really emphasises the harder side of electronic music featured on Opilec. Brutal yet ephereal, it takes you away with its pounding, relentless pace.

Take You Deep by Playdoughboy
A clapping snare and a bouncy warped bassline quickly draw you into this one. A track that lives up to its name, this is a house number with a repeated sample asking you to ‘Let me take you deep to the underground’ – and it does exactly that. Brilliant.
