‘The Hare, The Hound and The Tortoise’, the debut album from Brightonian six-piece Sweet Sweet Lies certainly doesn’t disappoint. Even those with a very limited taste in music can find something to appreciate in this masterpiece

Each track consists of its own styles and influences. With some you get Johnny Cash style, country influence, and some a foot-tapping, folk style with a slightly Ska-Style sound.

One particular track that really stands out is ‘Overrated girlfriend’, with swinging bass lines and punchy lyrics- performed in a style that sounds like Jim Morrison of the Doors crossed with Alex Turner from the Artic Monkeys.

This is certainly one of those albums where each track can change your mood from calmly listening along to a full-blown hootenanny!

Although it is obvious a lot of emotion has gone into this album - with the majority off lyrics focusing on life on love. But some being just extremely blunt and honest with one song simply ending in ‘I’m too drunk to f***, so just kiss me goodnight’!

There is quite a lot of quirkiness on certain tracks with the song ‘valentine’ which features a very unusual, dark-sounding waltz.

This album is definitely worth a listen, with everything from authentic sounding folk tunes to mariachi horns and waltzes.

So with so many influences on each track, it’s easy for anyone to find a track on ‘The Hare, The Hound and The Tortoise’ they’ll enjoy!
