Bristol based folk-tronic artist Jilk takes the pioneering style of Four Tet and races it forward, making it his own, resulting in an ambience that is both relaxing and highly addictive to those who can't resist a good old boogie.
And his latest EP Carry On! doesn't fall short, engaging a spacious lullaby with his rustic-relatable escapades. This dreamsville presence is particularly evident on Shhhh!, which glows through thought-provoking piano simplistics and reverbed whispers, distinguishing a shoegaze-inspired world that slowly builds up into the warmth of natural-wooden clicks and bleeps.
Jilk's happy-go-lucky vibrance is something extremely rare to experience in electro-dance, and he pulls it off in perfection. With Pawed Into being the complete epitome of this, flourishing in soothing synthetics and uplifting beats. Combined with violin sweetness, this track is to blame for the removal of gravity, as you feel yourself begin to float up into the beaming blue sky, reflecting onto the ocean below and soundtracking a heaven that everybody hopes for.
And of course, the EP would be nowhere near complete without a guest slot from Coppe'.
Dusty Tapes and Nuclear Raindrops feeds an out-of-space daze, with it's gentle beats and beautifying glockenspiel resonators. While Coppe's voice fades in and out, taking listeners into an otherworldly state that rejuvenates those who feel a fresh breath, surrounded by brightening exuberance.
But perhaps Man Up, Yeah? is the most joy-fuelled, miss-mashing together a buoyant collection of blossoming guitar strings, adding to the domestic, identifiable soundscape. With an additional musique-concrete-inspired essence, the often quirky Psapp-like vibes prevail an animation of energy, stapled together by Jilk's softened vocals.
The 24 minute long bonus track Dusty Archive (Suite) delves further into jarring clicks of experimentalism, lead forward by crackling record player noise and calming synthetics, building a whole sound picture of progression.
Sit back, relax and Jilk will take you into his kaleidoscopic vision. Often minimal, often swarming with creativity, Carry On! will bring back your enthusiasm instantaneously on one of those long, hard days.
