Pick of the Pops is a BBC Radio 2 show on every Saturday. It takes a look at the charts of yesteryear. Each week the presenter picks a couple of years and chooses some chart highlights from the same week in those years, effectively re-running the chart rundown for that week / year.
This set focuses on three main years to feature in the show – the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s and dedicates a disc to each decade.
The CDs are a good selection of tracks taking both the obvious and the perhaps slightly more unusual. Obviously too young to remember the 60s I wasn’t aware of some of these tracks but they do appear to be all Top 10!! The 70s are similar (still don’t remember!) but The Tymes got to 18 so not quite so successful!!
The 80s is where I can speak on some authority and it’s a mixed bag, but I need to appreciate it is for Radio 2 so Cliff Richard, Tina Turner and Shakin’ Stevens’ do appear to be order of the day. Michael Jackson, Blow Monkeys and T’Pau restore some level of respect but it’s not cutting edge 80s!!
