Tunnel Blanket is the second full length offering by Texan four-piece This Will Destroy You released by Monotreme Records.

Having just received this album on the eve of a trip to Finland it proved to be the perfect accompaniment for driving through the forested wilderness. At times reminiscent of Tarantula A.D. the album meanders through a landscape of expressive and emotive beauty. Throughout the record there are moments of surprisingly effective and mellow calm which serve to heighten the intensity of the heavier sections like in 'Killed The Lord, Left For The New World'.

This Will Destroy You have resisted the convention of creating individually accessible tracks requiring the listener to take on the album as a whole. Fighting the current trend, the risk of not yielding to an iTunes Market was worth it in my book. The album although sitting outside of pop conventions and less obvious in comparison to some of its post-rock piers has moments of real clarity and shows that its not necessary to have instant catchy hooks and melodies.

With John Congleton at helm, the album ebbs and flows in intensity and can be seen as a set of eight movements. With this in mind its not a big step to categorising them with The likes of The Portico Quartet with their cinematic soundscapes not too far removed from one another.

All this said, at times the record lost its way and subsequently my attention. Not being familiar with their previous work I have now idea how this album has progressed from where they left off but there are some interesting ideas here even if they at times fail to fulfil their potential.

Although this record will never receive the endorsement of any public airwaves it is worth, if this isn't within your area of musical taste, looking beyond any preconceptions of genre and sitting down to listen to what is a compelling and fairly complete piece of music.
