The Lights are a Birmingham based five-piece who are being tipped to make a breakthrough this year, after 12 months of solid gigging and radio sessions. Described as difficult to pigeon-hole with a unique sound, expectations are high as the guitar intro (reminiscent of The La’s ‘There She Goes’) gets underway. The enthusiastic male vocal is joined after 20 seconds by drums and a female vocal, to blend wonderfully.

Comparisons with The Beautiful South are not entirely obvious on this single, which has a rockier edge than Paul Heaton’s former partners, but you can imagine that it’s a tempting direction for them to take. In fact, second track ‘Sunday Best’ is The Light doing a darker version of The Beautiful South.

The vocals of Shaun Kelly and Liz Shiels are the trump card here, working perfectly in combination. But lyrically there are some lovely couplets too; “Fed up with the fake romancing, I’d rather be disco dancing” is the chorus refrain. You imagine The Lights are good fun to have around and right now that’s a good thing.
