Red Bull (label)

This is an odd EP. It has fantastic production but lyrics which sound out of place, the songs are quite cheesy but they utilise some of the most modern sounds in music and the cover art is in 3D but the song-writing is pretty one dimensional. This is the sort of music than dramatically divides opinion and makes a little more sense that the artists are American. ‘Burn It Down’ sounds like a straight up rock song but with a Euro pop backing that then becomes quite industrial sounding. ‘Guilty Filthy Soul’ which apparently features Sam Ronson in the video is also a strange beast which comes off like an 80’s throwback remixed for the year 2020.
Awolnation main man Aaron Bruno previously with band Under The Influence Of Giants has a vocal style that changes with each song and his latest creation is either brilliant or terrible but it is difficult to decide. In some ways it feels that this EP has been dreamed up by a PR genius as it is on Red Bull (yes, the drink) records, features heavy promotional gimmicks like the aforementioned 3D cover and is also being release as a limited edition T-shirt with downloadable MP3 tag! They are playing at some pretty hip venues like the Old Blue Last too which just leaves the music that is a whirlpool of weirdness that many may loathe but equally hundreds will love.
