The band manages to transfer it's big live sound to its inaugural Let's Play Jesus album, although it may require a couple of listens to discover what they are all about. This is when it really gets under your skin and also when you realise the complexity of the songs. You can now start to read more into what these guys are about. With its "strange” lyrics at times, it's hard to believe that most of these songs are about everyday things including love (of all things).
Inspiration I am told comes from many directions including movies, and that would explain why in my opinion their sound would also fit well into movie scores. As with any album there has to be a favourite track or two and with 12 tracks on this one it was difficult for me to pick out my favourites. The opening track "Fascination Street" is a good place to start, followed closely by "Heart and Soul". The halfway point is marked with an instrumental! which seems a bit strange, but "The Pill Of Immortality" tends to grind on aimlessly before the listener is jolted back to life with the title track "Let's Play Jesus" kicks in. Next up is "Death Row Alley" apparently about Charles Manson (I hope he likes it). Another well worth a listen is "A Fear Of The Lord".
While it may be fairly easy to see where their musical influences and style derive from (Punk, Alternative, and 80's Goth etc), it is not so easy to pigeon hole them into any specific genre of music, Darkwave / Industrial / Goth. They do have a unique sound for the times we live in and such diversity should be embraced.
