Ok, colours to the mast here – I love a band whose tongue is rammed deep into its cheek but, and this is a big but, only if their musical talents stand alongside their pose. There are a million bands who claim to be ‘Good Time’ and who reckon they have heart of true pop beating within their chests and around 999,998 of them are utter crap with no redeeming features or talent to go with their posturing.
On the basis of this album Foxy Shazam fit into the other 2.
This is huge, infectious and camp as all get-up but it is also incredibly listenable to and more than just the once.
They have huge nods to the likes of The Darkness or Mika but they also have the real talent that Queen or Sparks were able to add to their music.
The songs are all originals, loaded with great melodies, reaching choruses and massive beats and the band play with real infectious humour and great FUN.
‘Wanna-Be Angel’ is a gorgeous piece of pouting pop-brattishness, ‘Bye-Bye Symphony’ has an anthemic reach and 4 minutes of pop-rock bombast to it – you can almost see Freddie Mercury strutting the stage to the huge backdrop of the song – and ‘Unstoppable’ is just blistering soul.
‘Oh Lord’ is a brilliant single, and the opener ‘Bombs Away’ is soi far over the top it meets itself on the other side.
Tacky, camp as hell and arrogant as it gets – I so wish that these guys were Brits ‘cause Eurovision would be guaranteed.
