When people say dance music is boring it seems that the type of dance music they have been forced to listen to is the type showcased on this compilation. For non dance fans this is just repetitive beats peppered with bongos, bass and the odd deep voiced samples. For dance fans this is perfect bar music or ‘getting ready’ music and takes its cue from the deep house sounds of yesteryear. It may be dull and formulaic at times but tunes such as ‘Bad Bread’ and ‘To Get Down’ by George Andrews show there is still life in the old soulful dog yet.
Other highlights in this most fluid of mixes come from M.in with the weird sounding ‘The Beat’ and the excellently titled ‘Wookie’ by Paul Thomas. This selection also boasts appearances from Nic Fanciulli, Faithless and the mighty Underworld so there is something for everybody here. Mark Knight is able to meld smooth house tunes with sharper more modern cuts all of which form a continuous head nodder of a record. Occasionally it suffers from a lack of inventiveness and sounds a bit old fashioned in places but its admirably inoffensive groove is a taste of the dancefloor that won’t rip your head off.
