The man who made his name in the Housemartins and then furthered his profile with The Beautiful South is back on form. It seemed in the mid-late 90`s almost every household had a copy of `Carry on up the Charts` as it appealed tp every spectrum of society with catchy pop songs that kept a credible edge through sharp lyrics and genuine talent
The band split up due to `Musical similarities` and Paul has continued to ply his trade through solo albums, Radio shows and appearances on Channel 5`s only show that`s any good `The Wright Stuff` . His new offering `Acid Country` is a spectacular return to form for a man the wrong side of 40. His voice is better than ever and his lyrics grow sharper with age
The especially epic title track `Acid Country` is the stand out track. for me. It combines Americana style country influences with an endless supply of satiric wit and poetic poise. It clocks in and around the 7 minute mark yet every word keeps the listener amused, entertained and in awe throughout.
another track `Even a Palm Tree` is a triumphant sing-a-long ditty which sees Paul and his female singer exchange insults in a humorous fashion. Paul begins the song with `I cant find you attractive unless I`ve had drugs` and he is told later on the track that `(men) your all just cavemen in better cars and worse clothes`
Paul`s multi-platinum selling voice has always been rightly commended but a fact that many overlook is just how cutting and sometimes controversial his words can be. This is the guy who had a hit with a song called `Don`t Marry Her (Fuck Me)` and it was lapped up by many who would normally guffaw at the slightest inkling of a swear word on say a gangsta rap track. That`s the beauty of Mr. Heaton, he makes pop music that all ages can enjoy but if you listen really closely to what`s being said you may find a whole new level of art that you never knew previously existed.
as the years go by he seems to be getting better at finding the line between making accessible, credible pop music with cutting edge lyrics that put his younger contemporary s to shame. This for me is the most surprising record of the year and it gets better with every listen. Music-news.com highly recommends this to people of all ages as their truly is something for everyone on every intellectual spectrum. The songs will make you play, the words will make you stay
