Bringing back the concept album; The Orb and David Gilmore have teamed up to create a stunning forty –eight minute tour de force spread over two tracks.
The first of the two tracks, Metallic Side, sounds like a funky space station. It’s very sparse with a lot of synth sounds, high pitched electrical squealing and Gilmore’s legendary guitar tone. Being twenty eight minutes long I was put off at first by the length but this is such a well crafted and layered track that time does not become an issue; it’s very engaging and with every listen I’ve heard something I didn’t hear before. Spheres Side, the shorter of the two being twenty minutes long, is very similar to its predecessor: a sparse, futuristic ambient track which really keeps the listener engaged.
Having David Gilmore’s name plastered all over the release will do Metallic Spheres a massive commercial favour as it will increase the album sales tenfold. I’m pleased about that as it means more people will listen to a brilliantly composed LP.
