Most heavy metal bands use biblical imagery in an ironic way but Christian head bangers I am Alpha and Omega are deadly serious in spreading the word of Christ. Religious messages aside, whilst there are some catchy tunes and memorable parts, it is on the whole unoriginal and tiring.

The trouble is metal as a genre has outgrown itself and should be dying; quit whilst it’s ahead. Yet it’s being kept alive by thousands of bands dressed in black screaming down microphones attempting to be something new in a field where they only too easily blend in. IAAAO unfortunately are no different. Their album The Roar and Whisper opens with a promising intro song yet the screamo vocals and predictable guitars put the album into the context of “yet another metal album.” That’s not to say it’s all bad: enough parts of the album stand out as being catchy and well written to make a lot of the songs a lot more than mere background music to be forgotten about.

The Roar and Whisper was released at bad time: where metal has over saturated itself with poor to mediocre bands. Any other time this would do a lot better and stand out more than it does. As it is released in 2010, I can only think that the band aren’t being daring, creative or imaginative enough
