Mercury Rev

In A Funny Way is a feel good, grand scale pop song that subtly incorporates a myriad of styles. It opens with a Phil Spector type back beat and the Revs trademark sorrowful vocals. Lurking in the background is a psychedelic explosion waiting to burst, but never fully comes to fruition, and a winey Hawaiian sound (apologies music purists, I've no idea what the instrument is!). The overall flavour is reminiscent of a Polyphonic Spree moment of uplifting largesse, but pulls short of their fulfilling crescendo. It almost reaches anthemic proportions but somehow shows restraint. However, I predict it will become a live favourite and will engage the audience in both foot tapping pride and singalong mode.
