The Camden stages have become the best scenario and showcase for young artists to be seen. Some of them are good acts, but I thought none of them ever ticked all the boxes. There came Selah, this twenty one year old singer and songwriter, to prove me wrong. As soon as she started singing, I simply wanted to hear more and more.
Selah demonstrated why many people have described her as the little woman with the big voice. This young lady does not need anything else than her voice to own the stage. And honestly, in a musical panorama dominated by autotune and synthetic vocal arrangements, listening to such a powerful and special voice is a complete breath of fresh air. Yes, in Selah’s case, it’s all about the voice.
The Brixton songstress opened her set with ‘You’ and ‘Safety Net‘, beautiful up tempo ballads that not only demonstrated her astonishing vocal control, but also her attitude: she really feels the lyrics and gives her own interpretation. She makes it look so easy!
‘Love Me The Same’ brought out all the soul of her voice while ’When The Sun Doesn’t Rise’ was her best performance of the night. Selah absolutely knows what she’s doing. Actually, she’s one of those artists that really surprises you, and that brings me back to her nickname: you would never expect such a powerful voice from such a young singer. Remember her name.
