I am not a huge aficionado of Rap music but I am a lover of good music, no matter what genre or form. K-OS makes great music that happens to be in the Rap form.
Born Kheaven Brereton K-OS is not your classic boaster, his raps seem to talk more about situation and the state of the world than they do about him or the limits of experience that most rappers seem to had found and the samples are chosen with real care and fitted in to the music rather than forcing his rap to their style.
A few real crackers here; ‘Zambony’ has a huge and cataclysmic feel to it, ‘Burning Bridges’ is the best number, musically, on the album and ‘I Wish I Knew Natalie Portman’ is as whack here as it is as a single- I still don’t understand it but I love to listen to it!.
‘Uptown Girl’ is a superb piece, sampling Shocking Blue’s ‘Love Buzz’ and with a ‘proper’ rap, ‘the Aviator’ boasts a buzzing bass line but the track to beat all is ‘Mr. Telephone Man’.
Born in Trinidad and formed in Toronto this is a way away from LA or Philly but it allows K-OS a level of individuality that sets him apart – great album.
