Volcanoes have been causing a bit of stir lately. They’ve earned favourable reviews, good airplay, and had sessions with the BBC Radio Sheffield and BFBS Radio, on the back of their previous EP Shaking That Brass.
They may be lumped in with the indie crowd but there’s far more to them than that straightjacket of a label would suggest. Opener Level Up is a driving pop/rock song that has some quirky guitar work. Fret in the Half Moon with its staccato bass riff is a shade darker, but still retains that indie/pop sensibility.
The band then throws us a curveball with the swinging Pigs in Blankets, which has a touch of the fab four about it. Fathoms opens with a Rideish guitar riff and from that craft a multi-layered track that twists, turns and builds to a suitably epic finale.
What sets Volcanoes apart from the rest of the indie crowd is their talent with melody. All these songs are laced with wonderful melodies that make the songs interesting to listen to, but they also stick in the mind. Highly recommended.
