The island of Ireland has produced many great musical artists over many years. It’s a fertile ground for pop, rock, punk and any other genre you care to mention. General Fiasco dabbles with indie/pop but I doubt will feature in the pantheon of great Irish bands.

They do have some catchy tunes as in Ever So Shy and First Impressions. The thing is there are too many tracks that just whizz past, while you wonder if you’ve done the laundry, or cleaned the cat’s tray.

Sinking Ships ups the interest levels a bit with its acoustic base, and the addition of strings and harmonies. Talk to My Friends is a nice bouncy number. The title track itself is the longest song on the album, but the patented loud, quiet, loud approach etc just fails to hold the attention.

As with many bands cluttering up this area, there’s nothing inherently wrong with what they do. Invariably the performances are solid throughout and it’s well produced and arranged. They’ve created a big sound but so does everyone else in these days of Mr Sheen over-production.

It’s harsh to have a go at a band for not being original – many rock bands are currently excavating the 70’s for inspiration – but there’s a blandness here that you’d expect from a well established act in mid career. This just doesn’t sound like the debut album of a hungry band.
