Australian Sarah Blasko’s third album 'As Day Follows Night' is the first to be released on these shores. Following on from single 'We Won’t Run’ comes 11 more tracks with lush production courtesy of Bjorn Yttling of Peter Bjorn and John fame. The whole album is quite laid back with a Eric Morricone movie style soundtrack, as replicated a few years ago by Husky Rescue.
Vocally I keep thinking of Martha Wainwright when listening to this album, which is no bad thing. It certainly takes a few listens to get into the vibe of this album but when you do you are rewarded with some beautifully produced and performed tracks. It’s mostly laid back tracks (not ballads – just laid back!) however tracks like 'No Turning back’ and 'Hold on My Heart’ do up the tempo a little. The single 'We Won’t Run’ is the highlight here though and stands out strong as the key track. The production is never overpowering, and musically the arrangement is fairly minimal, keyboards, light drums and not much else; this all allows Sarah’s vocals to take centre stage.
This really has been a discovery for me, and for the last week has received constant repeat plays; it just such a variance from much I hear these days. Essential listening.
