Joan Jett & The Blackhearts
Greatest Hits
Blackheart Records

There have been a few Joan Jett collections floating around since the former Runaway started dominating the rock scene as a solo artist, but some collections, while quite good, were just we not comprehensive enough for her many die-hards.

Her new greatest hits collection, which was released amidst the buzz of the film The Runaways, is the most complete Jett collection ever (just wondering - where is the box set?), From her reworking of Runaways classics ('Cherry Bomb' 'You Drive Me Wild' and 'School Days'), her hit single days ('I Love Rock N' Roll,' 'Crimson and Clover,' 'Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah),' 'Everyday People'), all the way through to the present ('Androgynous') - all the reasons why she has long deserved the title of the original riot grrrl is fully explained on the double CD set.

All the prime Jett cuts are here, and her take of Bruce Springsteen’s 'Light of Day' is fierce and outdoes The Boss’s version (he has coved the song live) while her most recent hit, 'A.C.D.C.', from 2006’s Sinner CD, proves that Jett still has the ability to rock harder than most guys!

Joan Jett
By: Todd Oldham
Ammo Books

While Jett’s musical career is very well documented on her hits package, a new book titled simply, Joan Jett (by Todd Oldham), sums up the life and her career. Primarily through pictures and quotes, Joan Jett is an incredible look at Jett’s career from Runaway to Rock veteran who has the respect of all. The pics are lavishly presented and many (actually, most) are rare and unseen photos of Jett. The book covers her earliest pre-first guitar lesson days, The Runaways, her videos, touring, even her love for the Baltimore Oriels is covered (Jett is a diehard Oriels fan!)

Oldham did a wondrous job in compiling the pics and intertwining them with the short-stories that keep the book at an easy reading and fun pace (not a chore to read,as some overly detailed Rock tomes have been). This is the most in-depth look at Jett and the one that most have be looking for.

It is an amazingly well done book which commemorates her often her life as tenacious pioneer, risk-taker, and one of Rocks most identified female icon.

Neon Angel: A Memoir of a Runaway
By: Cherie Currie
IT Books

While Jett has gotten the lion’s share of the attention as a solo artist, she took a back
seat in the Runaways when Cherie Currie was on vocals. Currie was as solid and charismatic a front-person as their ever was (and she was only in her teens during her tenure in the Runaways).

Neon Angel chronicles Curries Runaway days as well as her pre and post rock star life. While Currie does a brutally honest job of recollecting her sometimes very painful past: she was once abducted and beaten for six hours by a crazed fan, not to mention some of the sleazy exploits of former Runaways manager, svengali, Kim Foley, not to mention the amount of misogyny the band faced in the 70’s.

Curries book is a beguiling read and one of the more accurate stories of a Rock stars life. And the introduction by Joan Jett is worth the price of the book alone. While the ending is a positive one and shows her to be happier and more creative nowadays, her struggle was a brutal one and is really more of story of survival than just another rock star tell all.
