Duran Duran’s third album – 'Seven & The Ragged Tiger’ – was released at the back end of 1983, and really affirmed their position as of the top bands in Britain. 'Rio’ had previously raised them to real stardom, 'Is there Something I Should Now’ had topped the charts as a standalone single, and now was the chance to capitalise on this success. Seven and the Ragged Tiger was preceded by the single 'Union of the Snake’, and then also had 'New Moon on Monday’ and 'The Reflex’ released as singles; the latter being their second number 1.
'Seven and the Ragged Tiger’ was a departure from the more pop sound of 'Rio’ and provided a slightly maturer sound. As well as the singles, tracks like '(I’m Looking For) Cracks in the Pavement’ and 'The Seventh Stranger’ became fan favourites, and it’s easy to see why – both had single potential.
As with the Rio re-release last year, this package includes plenty of additional material, including b-sides, the aforementioned 'Is there Something I Should Now’ (never a UK album track) and some good remixes and live tracks. Top mentions from CD 2 are the dance mixes of 'New Moon on Monday’ and 'The Reflex’, and b-side Secret Oktober, which is apparently on of Simon’s favourite tracks ever, and is a contender for some live action soon.
If this wasn’t enough, there is also a DVD – 'As the Lights Go Down’. This has never been official released (although available on bootlegs) so is quite an impressive inclusion. 'As The Lights Go Down’ is the concert that became the Arena live album, plus some extra tracks. It was filmed in California (shame it wasn’t the UK) and is quite a visual spectacular, as you’d expect from the band based on their music videos!! There are also the official music videos for all 4 singles, as well as some TOTP appearances.
It’s a great package for fans, and also intrigued people who have never really explored Duran Duran beyond the Greatest singles collection.
