20 March 2010 (gig)
21 March 2010
As a relatively big fan of Ash and their A-Z single series, I was a little ticked off when I found out that their only Irish gig of their Spring/Summer dates was invite only. Then I managed to snag a ticket of course laughed and pointed at those that hadn’t.
After a lacklustre opening set from self proclaimed 'punk band’ Republic of Loose, Ash stepped on stage with usual mosh inducing opener 'Loose Control’. The band didn’t take a breath to steady themselves all night as the reminded people why they’ve been such a successful act all these years.
It is quite noticeable however, that they seriously need another member. New acquisition from Bloc Party and hilariously ironic Ash cover band guitarist Russell Lissack wasn’t here. It must have become obvious to the guys that while they want to be a 3 piece band again, they simply aren’t. A major proportion of 'Twilight to the Innocents’ and the majority of A-Z track used backing tracks, reminding me of a glorified karaoke.
Having said that, Ash were their charming selves. Tim’s interactions with the crowd and set list were aimed to please and they did just that. Even though the guys were a few days late for St. Patricks Day, they pulled out a surprisingly fantastic cover of 'Whiskey In the Jar’ that got the Irish crowd pumping.
While I will say I miss Charlotte a lot, one can’t look to the past and Ash have created a new identity with this A-Z series and are still a fantastic live band. I encourage anyone who can to see them on their European tour, especially in the UK where Russell will sure be sure to add that extra layer that maybe some of us feel is missing.
