Manky Bastard has quickly become the hottest event in Edinburgh, bringing not only the best bands to the stage, but also the guarantee of a musically-dramatic, seriously entertaining evening. Performing tonight for the Manky crowd are the gorgeous Make Sparks, The Strands and Cast of the Capital.
Up first are Cast of the Capital, four musicians with one very special dancing technique! Kim Deal once said that the success behind Pixies bass lines was an ability to keep it simple and keep it consistent: Cast of the Capital seem to play by theses rules tonight with steady beats and never-wavering, happy tunes. It took Cast of the Capital a couple of tracks to get into their groove, but once they did, they played a blindingly beautiful set to start the Manky Bastard evening.
Unlike previous act, second band The Strands are purely brilliant right from the second they step under the spotlight. Combining loud with loud, The Strands use the power from two guitars and phenomenal bass lines to showcase old tracks and new. The Strands may have been on a break for a while, but with their strong performance tonight, proved that the 'comeback’ gig was anything but a one off.
Headlining the Manky show this evening are Make Sparks, clearly a very tight act, who perform each track tonight with playful harmonies and intricate elegance. The lyrics are delivered beautifully and mellow, juxtaposing the fast, heaving guitars and bass. Make Sparks lend their creativity to their set this evening, with their absolute precision in song writing bringing in an incredible live performance.
