Jason Derulo has come from nowhere and scored two huge hits, with ’In My Head’ currently sitting on top of the UK Top 40, but has he got the staying power? Well his self-titled debut album has 8 more tracks in a fairly similar vein so if his fans have loved his material to date, the answer looks like 'Yes’. The album reminds me quite a bit of JLS with a poppy RnB sound big on commercialism, and radio friendliness. 'Ridin’ Solo’ fits neatly with the previous two single and could well be the next single. 'The Sky’s The Limit’ is a bit different with some euro-pop synths appearing along with the verse having a 'Flashdance’ feel to it – had to check it wasn’t some sort of cover / sample when I first heard it!!
He does manage to slow it down on 'What If’ and 'Blind’ showing there is a mellower side to his sound – again these are fairly stock pop / RnB tracks but do at least vary the pace a bit. 'Blind’ is quite a strong song with a gentle verse building to a rousing chorus, even if the lyrics are a bit cheesy. Final track strobe light also requires special mention for using what sounds like a stylophone at the start!!
Overall, it quite a strong album – not really bringing anything new to the party, but delivering 10 catchy, commercial songs to a well defined audience who will lap this up.
