‘Black Light’ is the new album from electro duo Grove Armada. Full of variety and inspired beats the record is nicely polished with a mature and punchy feel. Immediately recognisable are the new musical influences on the record, making it different from any other previous GA album. What’s more, each of the eleven tracks have vocal collaborations, including Brian Ferry on ‘Shameless’ and Will Young on the final track, ‘History’.
Opener ‘Look Me In The Eye Sister’ storms in with surging guitars and drums that wouldn’t look lost amongst an indie rock quartet. Tiptoeing in and around the boundaries of indie and dance/electro, the track is the perfect way to get the album going. ‘Fall Silent’ is the second track and the first of four that Nick Littlemore is featured on. It’s an intense track that is full of variety and charisma, with a catchy chorus and synth-fulled beats.
‘I Won’t Kneel’ featuring SaintSaviour is the first single to come from the album, offering traditional dance grooves and something completely different from the second release, ‘Paper Romance’, a six minute plus, beat-ridden affair, which goes off in its own direction, messing around with experimentation and variety.
Brian Ferry is introduced towards the end of the album on ‘Shameless’. A definite highlight of the record, it oozes subtlety and sexiness. The track is followed by personal favourite ‘Time & Space’, which gives you a little bit of everything that each of the other tracks had to offer.
A magnificent album that makes every effort to grasp at every aspect within the dance/electro sphere. It’s a little bit different to what GA fans might be used to, but after a couple of listens you’ll be hooked. Definitely one for 2010’s album collection.
