French guitar virtuoso Angelo Debarre started playing at the tender age of eight and introduced his first group, The Angelo Debarre Quintet, in 1984. Angelo was discovered in a Parisian café in 1985 while performing there. Nowadays, he is widely recognised as one of the best musicians amongst the Paris gypsy jazz scene. He participated at important Roma people and jazz festivals, has frequently toured the UK and furthermore played at New York’s Birdland Django festival.
His new CD ‘Gypsy Unity’ is a quartet with Marius Apostol (violin), Tchavolo Hassan (rhythm guitar) and Antonio Licusati (bass).
The title track, Gypsy Unity’ is a fast-rythm arrangement in the vein of Django Reinhardt. In contrast, the slow-tempo ‘Bolero’ and ‘My Serenade’ with their dreamlike nuances evoke visions of a romantic tete-a-tete during sunset.
‘Fugue manouche’ is, as the name manouche suggests, a fine slice of gypsy jazz, while the seductive and laid-back ‘Sweet Noumea’ invites your senses to take a stroll along sandy beaches.
Other standout tracks are the highly uplifting ‘Compartiment swing’ and ‘Porto cabello’, a staple amongst gypsy jazz tunes. The album has twelve tracks altogether, each and every one shining with unique musical arrangements and exquisite compositions.
