Having enthusiastically, if not somewhat embarrassingly jumped at the opportunity to review a couple of She & Him releases last year, you can imagine my excitement when this little gem landed on my doormat... and then my disappointment when I realised that not only was this the new single and not the new album (the creatively entitled Volume Two is released on 5th April), but moreover it was only the a-side (the absent b-side being what the press release refers to as “a stunning rendition of the Beach Boys’ classic, I Can Hear Music”).
Nonetheless, having emerged from my all-consuming well of disappointment, I can now triumphantly report that “In The Sun” is a beauty. Strangely at odds with the harsh winter climes of the moment, but notwithstanding the frosty outdoors, the single’s summery, vintage pop shimmer, sweet melody, lush harmonies and M Ward-helmed production at least gives credence to Zooey Deschanel’s suggestion that the album will put a smile on your face.
Thankfully then, Volume One has a friend and I for one seriously hope there’ll be many more volumes – make us buy bookends Zooey, I dare you!
