Leona Lewis’s second album has arrived with much intrigue – can she match the success of Spirit, and top singles like 'Bleeding Love’ and 'Run’? Lead single 'Happy’ was beaten to number 1 by the Black Eyed Peas, which is a shame as it’s a stunning track. Elsewhere, the story is one of continuation. 'Echo’ hasn’t moved on much from 'Spirit’ which is probably a double edged situation. Fans (of which there are plenty) will love more high powered ballads like 'Can’t Breathe’ and 'My Hands’ with dramatic musical backing and Leona’s strong and unique vocals. Critics will be less impressed as it is similar to 'Spirit’ but at the end of the day who pays her wages??!!
'Echo’ does have a couple of edgier moments to cause dispute and discussion. 'Outta My Head’ is a euro-pop number that for me doesn’t work, although it is an attempt to move out 'Spirit’. The other track worthy of mention is her indie cover. Last time (belatedly) it was Snow Patrol’s 'Run’. This time she has chosen the seminal Oasis track 'Stop Crying Your Heart Out’. Oasis fans will obviously hate this, however I find it is a commendable cover, and hopefully a future single. What’s next for album 3 – Blur’s 'Song 2’??
'Echo’ is another credible album, showing Leona is still the best output from X-Factor, and has a unique and powerful voice.
