When I read the press release for Volcanoes, I reluctantly opened the little, plastic slip that held the bands EP ‘Shaking that brass’, expecting to hear five songs of awfully self indulgent Indie music in vain of absolutely every other band going. I was wrong; very wrong.
It actually turned out to be a pleasure to listen to. Five tracks of very different, very interesting indie songs, with a nice, sharp shine that instantly puts Volcanoes miles apart from everything and everybody else.
Each song is a tour de force of originality, from opening Track ‘Temple’ with its catchy, bouncy riff and consistently strong vocals, to ‘Eagle Eyes’ wholesome, bass riff and dance-along, happy-go-lucky guitar mastery.
Every track offers something very, very different. Sometimes there’s a little bit of brass thrown in (see ‘Charles Darwin’), and sometimes there’s a little bit of scratchin’ away on the decks (see ‘Making Progress’). The band have thought about their music, and put together something that is very meaningful and nothing like the manufactured guff we’ve come to associate indie music with. Lyrically, the band are much stronger than the bands that they will be closely associated with, thoughtfully put together, and extremely well written.
Refreshing and interesting, Volcanoes are extremely listenable, extremely entertaining and extremely exciting.
