Debut singles can be as tricky as follow-up albums: fail to deliver and you’re resigned to a musical wasteland with a 'must try harder’ black mark against your name. Not that Coventry four-piece Senses will have to worry on that score with their first outing on their own Ellipsis label.
With top producer Gavin Monaghan (who knows his way around what a good band should sound like, vis-à-vis Editors, Bloc Party, Kings of Leon) at the helm, these up-and-coming indie pop rockers kick into touch with a big sound debut.
Underpinned with a pounding drumline from the start, the nicely interwoven gliding guitar riff and catchy chorus line (a blast at their hometown, perhaps? 'not wanted’? surely not,) sit easily alongside vocalist Callan’s raw and meaningful delivery. The band list as influences the likes of Doves, Mercury Rev and Nirvana, amongst others, and there’s a detectable flavour of the three in here.
We’re Not Wanted, is a single worthy of a few spins on anyone’s deck. A tasty hors d’oeuvre in advance of their soon-to-be-released main course album. Bring it on.
