Well it seems to me that the ‘ladies' have finally taken control of the pop world. If the boy bands are out and the likes of Britney, Avril, Anastacia, Cristina along with their spiced up counterparts, Beyoncè, Kelly etc are all over the charts, their has been an upsurge of women singer-songwriters producing wonderful music this year. Edie Brickell's fabulous new album, A girl called Eddy, Norah Jones of course (the top selling artist of 2003), Joss Stone …..the list can go on and on.
Hoping to add to such list is K T Tunstall, a Scottish singer-songwriter who releases her debut EP on Relentless Records on October 04, and to my ears at least the future looks bright indeed. These four tracks produced by Steve Osborne(U2, New Order) sit comfortably together sending out shimmers of delight throughout.
‘False Alarm' is a gorgeous song tainted with Chris Martin vocal type delivery and being Coldplay these days is a plus. Delicate guitar reigns always serving the beautiful chord structure.
‘Heal Over' is mainly a vocal/acoustic guitar song with subtle vocal harmonies slowly drifting into a band ensemble, again deftly executed. All songs are shots of love potions to accompany you as you sink further and further into a drunken stupor.
‘Miniature disaster' reminds me of Paul Weller in it's general build in his most romantic guise, with pleasant keyboard chords over a shuffling drum. I'm sure she has many female references but these 2 guys are in the mix too.
‘Throw me a rope' is another colourful tune, again everything very underplayed, yet straining to be heard.
There is a lot of talent on display and I for one eagerly await the album that should be released in November. So after K D Lang prepare to check out KT. Could be a new catchphrase.
