Boz Scaggs

Boz Scaggs has what Steely Dan, Frank Sinatra, Miles Davis, early Stevie Wonder, for example, have. Let me explain.

They are to music as Rodney Marsh, Stan Bowles, Glenn Hoddle (the player), Liam Brady, Georgie Best are to football. They and therefore Boz are simply 'Class'! They ooze 'Class'; Grace; On their day they are as close to perfect as perfect can be. Like them or not, you know you are dealing with 'a selected few', it's like “they know!” if you know what I mean, nudge nudge wink wink.

So a Boz Scaggs live Cd is not going to be a shambolic, one-off “We'll see how it goes” affair but a determinedly studied, rehearsed and researched event. Indeed a rare event in Boz's case this being a one night only gig performed on the 27th august 2003 in San Francisco.

It's a Cd album and Dvd release executed with all the latest technology in terms of audio and visual definition. Of course this can seem a bit too calculated and emotionally shallow if you study in the Clash or Libertine school of rock(as I do) but I also like to be, if not surprised by an emotional rollercoaster ride, delighted and pleasured by musical expertise.
Boz has sorted out this 8 piece band to a high level of musical satisfaction and definition of his trademark sound as indeed all the artists I mentioned at the beginning have in their own particular style. Boz was/is a white soul boy who by combining r&b, rock, disco and blues made something special in the late 70's early 80's.So if some of the tracks are rather too clinical in execution, all is forgiven when ‘Lowdown', ‘Jojo', 'Miss Fun', and ‘Lido Shuffle' hit the groove.

It's not easy to find original Boz Scaggs albums so I'm glad to have this in my collection. The Dvd too is interesting as Boz's face is not as well known as say Mick Jagger, so watching him and the band is fun and even rather captivating at times.

It won't be to everyone's taste but a hungry man am I and this 4 star meal was devoured heartily.
