Deepest Blue, the pairing of Israeli born classically trained violinist and producer, Matt Schwartz, and Joel Edwards, a singer-songwriter, producer, mixer, aim to create eclectic, contemporary, uplifting pop. Shooting Star, their fourth single is definitely pop, most certainly contemporary and incredibly uplifting. Searing strings, with a clean, crisp style, you are drawn in instantly. If you like unthreatening, radio friendly pop then this will appeal. Edwards' inviting voice is sweet, and thinly veils a passionate brooding. My initial reaction was a reminiscence of Deacon Blue. Could it be Ricky Ross re-inventing himself? Alas no, a mere coincidence. Despite the obvious similarity of name and vox, there seems no link with the ‘Raintown' folk of the late 80's.
Shooting Star is the kind of unashamed slice of pop that you can access immediately and sing along to. However, you may also find its familiarity breeds an equally rapid contempt. But its uplifting pop qualities are hard to fault. Schwartz, who has worked with Massive Attack, and Edwards, who has Skin (Skunk Anansie) on his cv, are clearly a promising songwriting partnership. Their influences are as diverse as Lou Reed, The Cramps, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and U2, so it will be interesting to hear their forthcoming album, due out in late September, to properly judge them as a band. As a single, however, its joyfulness deserves its radio chance.
