Rubix are a music-promoting duo that have seen some of the best unsigned acts grace their stages over the past few years. On the first Thursday of every month, Rubix come to Edinburgh’s GRV to provide an evening of fun, frolic and fantastic music.
Performing tonight is Woodenbox with a Fistful of Fivers, a regular Rubix act with a delightful folksy and catchy sound. Woodenbox, or singer Ali Downer, has the onstage support tonight of bass, drums and sax, collectively know as A Fistful of Fivers. The lineup changes frequently, but this combination of musicians is always top form.
With hints of country and contemporary pop and rock, Woodenbox’s songs will appeal to a number of fans. The tunes are uniquely upbeat and quiet all at the same time. The vocals portray a thoughtful talent for song writing and although it’s a short set this evening, it’s a well thought out, passionate one. The finale is a potent instrumental leaving an audience hanging on every note. Woodenbox and A Fistful of Fivers are a folk sound for the modern ear, a treasure not be missed given the chance.
With Rubix only coming to town once a month, it’s certainly an event to add to the diary. Showcasing the finest unsigned bands right here in Edinburgh, Rubix are putting GRV on the map as a great place to see the next big thing.
