While I live and breathe, is Kid Carpet graduating from the juniors and about to go to big school? Has he finally grown up? Will we ever see his wonderful Fisher Price collection of kids plastic musical instruments from his assorted car boot collection again? The opening Hitting The Wall, a big electro sounding stab at Moby-esque, complete with an infectious synth break and soul diva backing wails, suggests musical puberty has arrived. Gone are the 30 second snippets of hilarity from his debut album Ideas and Oh Dears (check out the ABC spoof of Shoot That Poison Arrow), Casio Royale is packed with proper length songs and grown up beats. But don’t fret dear Carpet fan. Ed Patrick has lost none of his entertaining form, or how to put a broad grin across the listeners ears. Even on record, he captures the charm and boyish cheek that makes him a unique and highly entertaining live act.
New single, I don’t Want To Fall In Love With You, is certainly grown up stuff in sentiment and sound, and Make It Look Good is a groovy slinky piece of electro soul with the gorgeous lyric 'all fur coat and no knickers, push up your floppy knockers' reminding us he still deals in tongues and cheeks by the truck load. By the time Can’t Stop The Pop bounces in with its playful exuberance, you know KC is still happy in his chirpy playground, but with the added ability to hang out with the big kids when he so chooses. All Join On is overflowing with glorious chants of all things adolescent and naughty, 'all join on for playing with fireworks,. ., all join on for playing kiss chase,,..all join on for playing war' set against a banging electro hip hop beat.
Like a one man Carter USM with added synths, gadgets and chutzpah, and school yard underdog lyrics, Carpet is an eccentric Bristolian gem. Casio Royale marks a nudge towards big school without losing the lovable KC charm. And fear not, the plastic toys are intact.
